Have you ever stood on top of Nunhead Reservoir and looked out over London? It is a wide, flat field of grass at the top of one of the highest points in south London, and the view from it runs the whole way across the city. People used to go up there to picnic, to watch the sun set, to sit with someone. It has been fenced off for years. Meanwhile, at Honor Oak, a covered reservoir run by the same company has a golf club playing on the land above it. When Thames Water fenced Nunhead on security grounds in 2016, it confirmed the Honor Oak arrangement was unaffected. We are not asking for the gates to be thrown open. A green hilltop in the middle of south London, with a view over the whole city, and nobody is allowed on it. Nunhead Reservoir is a working drinking water reservoir, and its roof is a field. For years that field was where people met. Now it is behind a steel fence. Nobody in this campaign wants the water supply put at risk. Nunhead Reservoir has one of the great views of London, and almost nobody has seen it. The argument against opening it is always security. But Honor Oak, a covered reservoir on the same network, run by the same company, has a golf course on its leased land — and Thames Water confirmed that was unaffected by the security review that fenced Nunhead.
